Talking 3D max vs Maya wooooooo!

Hey all,

Been doing a lot of 3d studio max recently, Im pretty new to 3d but I'm getting better!

I'm trying to decide whether to use 3d max or maya. After some research I have come to the conclusion that maya seems to be preferred for animation but as for modelling capabilities, what is better maya or max? A lot of people seem to be divided over this. I want to gain solid knowledge in modelling before I move onto the animation side of things.

In the 3d industry is max more used for advertising and maya for movies?

I probably sound like a complete noob but I guess we all have to start somewhere!

Cheers,

Jordan

It depends, there aren't really things that one can and another can't, pick the one you can work with best, also don't forget to try C4D, XSI, lightwave, blender and silo for that matter. Apart from the UI and some minor differences, there shouldn't be all too much difference, the basics and principles are all the same.

The important thing is not what kind of tool you use, its your talant.
How good you are transfer your talant in to the tool of your choice!
Max,Maya Lightwave,XSI, Houdini and so on...
As StJoris said just pick the one you like most.

Ask yourself what you want to do first.

Games:Max, Maya, XSI
Arch Viz: Max
TV Effects: C4D, XSI, Lightwave, Maya
Films: Houdini........I dont care what anyone thinks....Houdini's playground is films!!!!!!!!!

Take your pick, then spend a few years mastering it.

haha Houdini is definitely a major player for the VFX in films, but as far as everything else goes Maya and XSI are the most popular.

U W4NN4 FITE??!?!!??1?

But really once you know one app it's pretty easy to transfer those skills to any other providing their architecture is fairly similar.

Now I'll echo what everyone else said some more because that's what these threads always turn into:

Try em out, pick one or two, then spend a few years mastering them.

YEAH I W4NN4 FITE!!!

Best modeler? Modo. Best animation package? Messiah Studio. Best digital sculpting package? Zbrush. Best texturing packages? Bodypaint and Photoshop. Best position? With a woman.

If you want to get into the industry, however, Max and Maya are the way to go. Houdini seems to be quite specialised with regards to VFX work, but Max and Maya learned skills are very package-transferrable. Especially with Maya 8.5.

Right, now that I've posted, we can put this thread to sleep .

It has been said before: any 3d application is great as long as you know how to use it. But, since you're new to 3D, you should go with 3DSMax. The reason is quite simple: there is a lot of tutorials available for 3dsMax. Yes, you can find tutorials for other 3d applications but not as much as 3DStudio related tutorials.

Once you understand 3d concepts (vertices, edges, polygons, modeling, materials, shaders, lighting, textures, ...), you can move to any other applications.

Have fun learning
