The Queue - Lets make changes!

Im going to throw this one open as theres been a lot of various complaints about how much people hate the awesome Fun-Queue(tm)

So, how would you make the queue work? Bear in mind the stats;

nearly 80000 members
over 150 gigs of video
several hundred invidivual videos

At the moment theres no resume, no file stacking and a few other features need to be fixed up at least. What do you want ? Preview streams, stats, name it

Ok, now personally I have no real gripes about the queue system it serves it's purpose well.

But how about on the tutorial page a health bar or something so people can see what tutorials are busy and ones which aren't, so if you want a quick tutorial to learn you can pick one that isn't so busy.

maybe you should put an small flythrough of every tutorial on it, so people can download that first to check if they want the entire tutorial (usually what I do is download the last one)
and instead of letting people download all the movies seperately,, let them download the entire set

hmm now I'm looking at it it doesn't seem like such a nice idea anymore, ah well that's my 2 cents

Sort of related: clean up the members, those who haven't been active for year orso and with <5 posts orso.

As for the queue, some sort of active status check; but i already suggested that, and you proved that it would go wrong ( can't remember anymore why though )

Sort something out so people can't take up multiple slots
Give them a limit of 5 minutes to start the download before kicking them off

This I agree with 100%.

Im a nosey git, and I look at the queue quite a lot, and I see multiple waiting downloads by people, thats not fair on the masses. Max #2 to queue at once. I have seen people waiting for 5-6 parts at once, thats 4 too much, depraving others of the spots.

I mean come on, you cant watch 4, 5, 6 parts and model all at once. Watch and model a part, whist waiting for the next fantastic installment.

Not sure what the answer is, but I know what my gripes are...

I spent an hour waiting for part one of the Lotus Elise tutorial today. Then an hour waiting for part two. Then an hour waiting for part 3.

So I decided to come back in the middle of the night, only to discover that there are now only 3 download slots available. So 25 minutes in, I'm position 82 in the queue!

I understand that you're paying for bandwidth, and I'm getting what I'm paying for (and *boy* am I grateful :@)

I appreciate that you're trying to keep the sponsor tutorials under your control. Is there a way that you can use a BitTorrent system for the free tutorials? You're not paying for bandwidth - and the tracker will ensure that I'm a member

Have a limit of download per user per day? Or maybe a number of download per day, per ip address because some idiots would create multiple accounts to bypass the system. Just an idea.

Pay to get "free" tutorials faster
Be able to "buy" a free tutorial. If someone can't wait in the queue, he/she could pay (I have no idea how much, £5/set?) and be able to download it right away. It would be almost like buying a tutorial from the shop: get an email with links and limited time to download... no more queue! (and Cris gets paid )

Problem with that is the well known solution of using proxies to fix download problems - it would also get around an IP address blocking solution.

Not good for the feng-shui im afraid. Bit-torrent is the worst system ever made for trying to control the distribution of tutorials. I can see the advantages, certainly, but eventually the torrents will die out, (as they always do).

This has been a discussion many, many times, and im afraid thats not going to happen.
