3D files lost

Well, I came to the realization that i've lost a fair bit of my more recent work. I know all too well about back ups, however. I lost 2 hard drives, and an IPod all around the same time.

I didn't find out until today that I lost some of work, such as the house I worked on, (some of you may remember the WIP thread) all I now have is the final rendered picture of it, no 3ds max file/textures to go with it. Couple other minor loses, I still have my whirlwind and as well as my reference/texture images.

So it was not a complete loss however it still sucks that I lost some of my work... to say the least I went out yesterday and got 2 500 gig drives for back up drives.

Anyone else ever loss work to hard drive failures, user "error" or anything else along those lines?

I lost all my original models to a HD crash a couple of years ago... Granted, they were awful... but still at the time I was happy with them...

I've never had a HD crash or get corrupt. In saying that I've probably jinxed myself so will back up all my stuff v.soon.

Only thing that is close was losing 2 days of work for my final project with only about a week left, which was a definite kick in the balls. Damned Max crashing and corrupting files.

hehe

Keeping everything important on external hard drives (i have 4) I have had my fair share of losses. I have been considering getting a terrabyte one to back everything I need up and not use that hd for day to day use. They have got smaller and cheaper.

I had a wipeout from Vista when it was first released. I lost everything. If you look my all my old works on this site, none of those exist any more thanks to a Vista crash. Also 3.5gb of recordings from that Gundam tutorial I started a long time ago, which I should get round to completing as some point.

lmao

i almost lost my stuff about a year ago until i got my teacher to spend a few hours getting it back. and it worked. so now your thinking tadpole learnt his lesson.... WRONG! i still only save my scenes once all day and the last time i backed up my hard drive was about one month ago. its a teenage rebellion thing i think, or maybe im just stupid. anyone eles do this stupid thing?

I had a USB key fall out of my bag in a classroom that someone yanked and I never saw again, I lost a whole semesters worth of work. Although, redoing them made them less in the poly count, and therefore better looking and more efficient. Ive also had my fair share of max corrupting, and It was usually due to the houses shitty shitty wiring. My room was apparently wired into the bathroom socket, so if the fan was on and the light was on and someone shut them off at the same time, It blew my breaker, usually when I was at school and no one knew i was rendering. Never had enough money for a battery backup, nor do those last long enough. Needless to say that corrupted lots of max files.

The biggest losses I incurred were when I got into my work, I forget to save every now and then, and then i get a max error, or something happens and I lose lots of work time, and yes as bad as it sounds I do disable the auto back up, only cause on certain projects IT was taking 8 minutes every time it auto backed up, and got VERY annoying. Oh yeah, and Ive had my fair share of 'user' caused errors as well, and I also tend to go through USB keys at an alarming rate. I will be on my third in a year. 1 lost, 1 fried itself, and then the new one ill buy.... :-/
