Serious Rant about "Game Dev" Schools

Ok, I'm just gonna go out here and put this stuff out here. I USED to help teach 3d Modeling at a charlotte NC based community college. I'm coming to conclude that this game Dev courses at colleges are complete garbage. For 2 Reasons, HORRID teachers and No Practical application.

I took a 3d animation class, to learn how to rig better, well when I got in the class I was introduced to this lovely programme endorphine by natural Motion. After using it for about a month, I've decided this is the worst damn application for animation I have ever used and I am droping out of the SCHOOL because of this.

I am sick and tired of trying to get better at 3d modeling from schools, what do you guys feel about the college system as it pertains to Game Dev or 3d Modeling?

They suck balls, majority of tutors don't know shit and are stuck in their ways of awful technique and the money could be way better spent on a kickass computer and a bunch of tuts and seminars.

Not really, if you have a kick ass reel you can get a job anywhere.

only because the industry is so young. Like all others it will evolve and the degree will begin to become important. although i agree whole heartedly, you dont go to school for game dev, you go for the connections it creates.

30+ years from now with no degree youll be using your place to the younger crowd w the degree and the skills, and youll wonder why you didnt apply yourself and get that piece of paper.

the game industry is young, but it will grow and like any other industry that piece of paper will become invaluable.

the old addage "those who can't do, teach" is unfortunately especially true with a lot of art colleges' 3d departments.

I remember my lighting class.

We had to light a model with a 3 light set up. Worth 30% of our term for that class. As long as you had 3 lights in the scene you got a 90%.

We had an animation teacher who had to teach charater modeling (he never modeled before in his life, he just knew how to animate) mind you he did a very good job but that is beside the point.

The bring it home, I learned more on my own in one weekend watching a good quality training DVD then I did in 2 years in school. The difference was about well 2 years of my time and 25,000+ in food, rent, and school.

I do actually sell a 'college edition' 3d-palace training dvd set. For only $25,000 you can have an old rejected DVD that I decided not to publish about 3 years ago and live in a squat with some alcoholics for 3 years. At the end of it I will give you a certificate thats about of as much worth as a college diploma.
