| | CRAP, help please !!
Hey guys. I just recently applied to Centennial College in Toronto for their 3D Animation program and while talking on the phone with the admissions rep, I was informed that all I would need is grade 12 english. All of a sudden I get this thing in the mail requesting my portfolio information. It goes as follows: Figure Drawings (3-7 pieces) Gesture drawings and anatomical drawings that demonstrate an understanding of proportions, weight, balance and movement are preferable. Colour Work A colour or tonal study; may be abstract, figurative or objective and must demonstrate an understanding of colour theory. Perspective (1-5 pieces) The portfolio should demonstrate ability to apply basic principles of linear perspective in freehand drawing and/or painting, and could consist of examples such as furniture, interiors or cityscapes. Sketchbooks Idea books can contain storyboards, comics, character designs (no anime please) or environment designs. Digital Artwork (1-5 pieces) This category can include work completed in Photoshop, Illustrator, Flash, After Effects or work completed using any 3D software package. Please note your sources if you are using a tutorial or reference images that are not your own.
Portfolio pieces from the following categories are optional (no more than 3 pieces from this list):
-Sculpture
-Printmaking
-Photography
-Creative Writing
-Music Compositions, Film, Animation or Performance Art
So...what da heck lol. Where do I go from here. I didnt know you had to be a pro BEFORE going to school. I dont know what to do now because all I want to do is 3D Animation. Not freehand drawing.
Any help would be appreciated. Thank you very much guys. And sorry if this is the wrong area to post in.

If you're looking to create and animate characters and environments, and learn the software required to do so, you better get crackin' on your foundational art to get that portfolio in on time.
Now, that said, my 2 cents...if you just want to animate...buy a good computer and tutorials.
Most colleges want you to take their art program before taking their 3d programs which is retarded because people just don't have that kind of money these days, especially in Ontario where we get shafted for post secondary fees - second only to Vancouver in some cases.
What you get isn't always what you pay for when it comes to college.

Like you said, I dont have money for an art diploma and then a 3d animation diploma. I got money for only the 3d animation lol. I checked them all out from what I know. Sheridan, Centennial, George Brown, Seneca, Herzing, etc. etc.

Don't misunderstand this. They are not asking for Rembrant-esq works here. All they are doing is making sure you..
1. Have a basic understanding of the subjects they asked.
2. By doing this they know you have drive and wont be wasting their time, and most of all, not disrupting other students.
Those listed are basic traits they think an artist needs to have (which I dont fully believe myself).

Yea but its asking a lot for someone who is capable of becoming good at 3D Animation but cannot do freehand drawing. But I see what u mean. Well Im gonna try to find a way to make a portfolio. Maybe just a crapload of Maya stuff instead of freehand. I cant draw worth **** lol.

You do understand that being able to draw will increase your 3D ability,
Thus being able to animate will increase your animation ability. Most people that are any good at animating know the fundementals to 2D animation first. I'm not saying you need it, but it will increase your ability.
I can not draw worth a damn when it comes to sketching. Howevering, give me the image you want me to draw and I am a human photocopier. I'm an ok 3D artist, but I found it carry over easier because I had that ability to copy what I see.

Oh just to add, i went to school for game design.
I had to draw 3 things, they gave specific things they wanted.
A normal egg,
A fast egg
A heavy egg.
The normal egg I did just that, drew an egg full blown out shading and the whole 9 yards.
A fast egg I drew an egg entering the atmosphere, showing the burning effect that happens. With the earth in the background The majority of this image was black, I think i used a whole bloody pencil on it.
A heavy egg I drew an egg on a scale with an anvil, showing the egg heavyier then the anvil.
For everyone I used reference material. Lots of it, and took the advice and critism of friends and my art teacher.
Later I found out my school accepted anyone, so maybe its not a great point but, well I like to think it is.

Doesn't seem like a whole lot from the list, get to work.
Like 1-5 photoshop/3d pieces, few figure sketches (which can be done in like under 5 mins), perspective study (get the ruler out, draw some buildings or w.e) and a colour piece. If you already have some PS or 3D done then all the other bar the sketch book can be done in a day or 2.

Here is a few Loomie .pdf's that are free. They are a bit old, but pretty good for figure sketching pricipals. Andrew Loomis
