OBJ File type

If someone has asked me to supply a material separated OBJ file, what does this mean?

I understand that if you Archive a file, all textures and materials are located in the rar.

but if you save as an OBJ, how does this work?
is there anything special that needs to be done to get the material separated file?

They could want the object split up depending on the materials.

Otherwise if you get the guruware OBJ Importer/Exporter, because the max one sucks, there's an option to use material and create material library; so that should bring the mat library along with the file. Haven't tested it myself.
