DoF is expensive on render time and comping it in using z-depth channel with Combustion instead can help you out a lot.

okay well thanks for the comments.
Not sure if I can afford the poly count to add Rudolph but that was something I was thinking of doing
I don't know what you mean by converting to proxies but I think I will look into it.
here is the latest DOV test, the problem I have with it is that the lights in the windows look like they are jagged.. not sure what is going on with that. wintersdayDOVtest2.jpg |

On what did you focus? I'd say try to focus on the house and let the trees be out of focus. As for the jagged edges, I don't know.

I'd reccomend not putting that in the scene. As with a reel, adding a bad looking piece takes away from the overall look and also decreases the scene's quality. It's a friendly advice. If you really want to have a reindeer in your scene, do a search on google, get some ideas and say you like the neck from pic X and the head from pic Y. Take those ideas and try to mash them.

okay well I still doing some tweaking on the materials and lights. but here is what I have for the moment. Hopefully I will post my final render in about an hour or two.
My system takes about 1:30 - 2:30 hours to render this scene. Cartooney_Winters_day.jpg |

Okay guys.. Here is my final render.
I think it seems to encompass what I envisioned of a cold winters day.
I get the feeling of a warm oasis in the middle of a winter wonderland. A place to ease off the chills, and relax, all the while enjoying the winter surroundings. Cartooney_Winters_day_final.jpg

It has the feeling of a stop motion scene, similar to the old Rudolph movie. Nice job and good luck.

Best ever, roll on Coraline!!
I agree with Kris, nice work and a real olde worlde feel to the scene as well. Also having a twister for chimney smoke looks cool!
