Time Long Forgotten

Been thinking about this since I first figured out there was a competition, about entering it, but had always slinked away because I figured I wasnt good enough to enter. But judging by the response in another post I did, figured what the hell?

So today I started thinking about an idea I could use. Like most I imagine, I immediatly start thinking about the obvious, meteors, nukes etc. I then started looking at a few of the entries here and reading the thoughts behind the images. I then started to think outside the box, tis where my thoughts come into.

I was thinking, end of the world, could possibly also mean the end of a time frame of human existance. For instance, if we were to go back in time 200 years, it would seem like an entirely different world. The air would be cleaner, water would be more clear, sky more blue etc. So I started trying to think of a way to depict this. I picked the time frame of the old west. Expansionism at its peak, on the verge of some of the big break throughs in human society today. So I figured I would try to depict the before and after in one single pic, instead of having 2 seperate renders for this.

My thoughts are from the perspective of someone perhaps daydreaming? from the outside looking in. Think of glass blocking off an area, the person looking in is in one world, but if your are inside the glass whose to say that you are back in the first world? If you are in a scene depicting the old west, are you not in a different world.... then a few steps away and that world ends and you are back to real life.

Not quite sure of all the details yet, what all I want in the scene, I just got this starting point and hopefully I can complete this.

Anyway, down to the details. The first piece I am starting to work on is an old style cannon that would probably have been seen back in that time from. Not much yet, just some minor detail work onto one of the wooden wheels, no textures or anything yet.

Hopefully the idea here will qualify for the competition.

I think for the most part the cannon is done. I think the actual cannon portion looks a bit plain, but looking back at cannons and what not that seems to be the norm. Otherwise though I am thinking I am going to work on the next pieces now.

Hi Tsukiyono!

If you want you can check these cannons to see some more details

expresso da linha: MUSEU MILITAR DE LISBOA - PÁTIO DOS CANHÕES

It's in portuguese, but the images speak for themselves.

This one will give you some more ideas, I think

Keep up the good work

That second link I think is actually one of my references :P Thanks for the other link though, does give me a few ideas for this, especially when it comes down to texture references as well. Hard to see the slightly discolorations that I can see on the whitish surfaces, vs a all black surface

I am working right now on just a simple quick thing to do a bit of practice making a texture and UV. I did a simple model of a crate, took me all of 5 minutes to model, and have been spending a good couple hours doing a uvunwrap lol .

I now have a more solid idea of the direction the camera will take and some more of the details. I went through several ideas yesterday just trying to get a feel for how it would look in max... did a nice simple block setup in max to show it and visualize it to myself. I think I shall have the camera looking through and fully enveloped inside one world, looking through the glass paneling right into the other world. Thinkiing to go along the lines of an other worldly museum perhaps, one world ends where another one begins.

Time line you are in this shot is the present, perhaps this year, looking through a full world of the 1800's. Walking through the door takes you from your timeline to in this case the 1800's. Admission is high cost, but to those that wish to be gone from the world and try again somewhere else its priceless. The one downfall of the decision, is once you make a decision to go to a new world, once you walk through the door, there is no coming back, that world has ended to you.

So although it wont be scene, this museum of sorts will have many timeframes that you could enter to get away from it all. Hopefully I can get this done, im not sure on texturing most of this so far, so this will be a challenge for me

One thing that helped me a lot with unwrapping is Headus' UVLayout - it's basically the best unwrapping software ever!

Does the demo allow you to save? The price is a bit steep otherwise for me at least right now.

In the basic version, you can save, but not the other professional ones. The saving scheme is a bit wonky - took me a bit to figure it out. You have to name your file and then add either a .uvl (UVLayout native format - for saving) or .obj for exporting. It doesn't append the file type automatically.
