Now that I look at it, the arms may be a bit too long and/or thin. This might help you: dwarf concept art

I was going to just sit in all day and work on my model because it was supposed to be cold and rainy today. It was far from cold and rainy when I woke up so I felt I had to do something useful outside. Mowing the lawn lead to clearing out the garage, clearing out the garage lead to painting the garage and 7 hours later I had done more or less everything there was to do outside.

I did infact work on my model for the last 3 hours and he almost has a long ranged weapon now:

The guy himself has had a small makeover as well:

I started out with the guy, but I'm sooo lousy at this kind of modelling. I just don't have any clue on how to model armor pieces. I think it's because you basically just model in thin air over your original mesh and I just can't make stuff look right.

That's why I went on to make him a rifle instead. Err, It's more like a hand cannon. It's based partly on the 30mm auto cannon which sits on the apache helicopter and a .50 Caliber Machine Gun. I'll see if I sci-fi it up a bit later. Probably not.

Many of the knobs and details on the gun are just placed there temporarily.

I'm headed for bed now, take care.

That's looking cool man, I like the shape. Think the torso could be a little shorter and the legs a little longer, not much though, and then you're good to go. Whack on some big hair and a beard.

I think with the wrist guards, they should be longer and then maybe go into a curved point covering the elbow. Just keep making them kind of shapes and mash loads of detail into them.

The little details usually make a model, so little touches like buckles on some boot straps and maybe like one strap hanging loose to give it a bit of variety.

In some parts it looks like armour but then also goes into a skin part so I think you should make them a little more distinct when you go into the detailing.

The gun looks pretty cool, not so much a usual Dwarf weapon though. I think the general big sword or hammer with a shield works well and has done for years. An idea for the throwing weapon (I think that was part of the brief) would be to have rocks tied together with string/rope. You see them on films and stuff, don't know what they're called though.

2 weeks left, have fun

Hi again everyone.

Long time no see.

I've been way too busy with work to even think about opening max the last few weeks, but seeing as the deadline is nearing I decided to just spend a couple of hours and "complete" my entry.

Since this is my thread I don't care if this image blows up the forum table.

Behold:

I actually think it turned out ok considering I've only spent about 14 hours from start to finish on this project.

Here's a short list over what I originally had planned for my dwarf:

- Detail the gun alot more. Subd model it instead of just chamfering the edges. Now I more or less slapped on some bolts, a handle and called it done.
- The hammer was going to have some very intricate details on the handle and head. My inital vision was to have it look like 2 anvils with a skull inbetween.
- Model the armor for the dwarf instead of just beveling and chamfering the hell out of the base mesh.
- Redo the helmet completely.
- Make some much better procedural materials for almost every object in the scene.
- Make a scene for him instead of just a sandbox.
- Rig him, atleast partly so I could pose him properly. I avoided posing him now because of that. I realised after I had completly destroyed the mesh with bevels and chamfers that I would have to make him grip the weapons. I had to collapse the stack and soft select 2 million triangles into position. I also tried like 40 different poses for his right arm so it started really looking twisted in the end.

Lastly, here's a clay and a (horrid) wire for those who care about that stuff:

Looks great mate, shame you didn't get time to finish it.

If I was you I would keep it and finish it, I know it won't count towards the competition but it would be a shame to not do the work you originally intended for it.

Oh and a small tip - I have never tried it myself but I have seen a lot of models where people want to pose it but as it is for one shot cant be bothered to rig it, what they do instead is use sofselect on the obejects and move them about that way. Just a thought
