Dreadnaughts are Fun

Finally got around to building my dreadnaught at the weekend. I think I followed the tutorial properly, but th model still needs a lot of work.

I really need to tidy up the rivets, since they're not very well aligned, also I would like to add some chains, purity seal etc, maybe even make one of those loincloth/banners that Space marines use as gothic fashion accessories. I may even model a twin-linked autocannon to replace the minigun that's poorly masquerading as an assault cannon.

I'd really like to texture this but unfortunately at the moment I suck at texturing.

The Dread looks really good. A banner would make it look better. Also, don't be afraid to do something like texturing, because you won't learn anything.

I thought a banner would be cool, oh well time to get to grips with the cloth modifier.
In regard to texturing what's the best place to start should I just use MAX textures to begin with, or would I be better off learning the whole UV mapping/unwrapping nightmare, so I can paint my own textures?

Well, the best thing to do is to learn both. UV mapping will help you with complex textures and such. Sometimes it's better to use the Max textures, to keep it simple. You should use what works best. Hope that helps

Thank you for the advice Vertex juggler. Looks like I'll be consulting the Necronomicon tonight, sorry I meant to say the Max Bible and try and get my head around UV mapping/unwrapping.

First dreadnought texture pics.

Ok, I have tried texturing my dreadnought with mixed success. Just thought I'd share my pictures with you. I still need to add the banner yet and a few other details, any criticism would be greatly appreciated.

Incidently Jackobeast, the Necronomicon will only swallow your soul if you don't protect yourself with sufficient Elder runes as I have, however I fear their power is waning......

Those renders look like paintings. Is that how they are supposed to look?

To modelstatue.

No they probably aren't supposed to look like paintings. Some renders either look ultra realistic or like photographs, mine don't. I actually wanted my pictures to look more like artwork for 40K book covers so I tweaked the renders with a paint brush filter in Photoshop.
