Few newbie questions

What's the shortcut for extruding an edge? In Max it's just hold shift while dragging the edge. I sure hope there's a better way to do it in Maya than by going to Edit Mesh -> Extrude.

Also, how do you have multiple views on at once?

I'm not sure what and if there is a default shortcut to extrude. What I did was create my own. But if you don't do that, just put the extrude command on your shelf and use it. Then after you extrude what you wanted, just hit the G key, which recalls your last command.

As for multiple views, there is an icon to the left with 4 little boxes or whatever.. click it and all 4 views show up. I'm sure there are other ways.

By default Maya doesn't assign a shortcut to extrude (or any edit polygon commands). You can set one by going to Window->Settings/Preferences->Hotkey Editor, or by doing what D3D said - add a button to you shelf (hold down ctrl+shift then click on a menu command to add it to your shelf).

For the views, you can pretty much set up whatever layout you want. Right click in the left side tool bar where the little icons for the layouts are and there is an option to customize your own layouts.

One thing I love about maya, is the ability to detatch a view from the main window, so you can drap it onto a secondary monitor, and still have 4 views on your primary, great for when your working with cameras!

For extruding, you can select the poly/edge and while holding down the shift key, right click and there you have it. I think that this is what you meant.

Oooh... those helped. Thank you. One more question, if you would: how do you quickly change views when you have only one maximized?

Hold down the space bar and you will get the marking menu that lets you select the other views.

Thank you for all that.

Now, then, how do you remove an edge just like how "Remove" does in Max?

Edit: Ooof, it's just delete.

And one more thing... my Maya seems to stutter a bit when I hit space quickly to minimize the viewport panel. Is there a way to get rid of this stutter? Perhaps through switching drivers as in Max?

There is also a delete edge tool under edit mesh that gets rid of the edge and all stray verts with it.

As far as the stutter when switching views, there's no way to switch drivers in Maya (it runs off OpenGL). The only thing you can do is make sure you have one of Maya's qualified video cards (or something comparable). Also make sure your video drivers are up to date.
