shaders on different faces

is there a way to use different shaders on different faces on the same object? i know it can be done very easily in Max, just select the faces and apply the material. I can't seem to figure it out in Maya.

It's the same: you select the faces you want, then apply the material exactly the same as you would on an object(either through right clicking, either through the hypershade). Hope this helps.

Probably you normal clicked instead of releasing the right click (marking menu) or middle mouse button clicking (hypershade). Glad I could be of assistance.
