Talking Guitar modelling probs

Hi guys, currently Im having some problems modelling the neck of a guitar. Ive tried two methods, both of these I have gotten to a point where I can't find a way around.

1. I tried to do it with a polygon cube and extrude it. But then I get stuck on what approach I would have to do next to create a much smoother looking neck (and to make it look like an actual guitar neck rather than a rectangular mess!!)

2. I tried an approach of using a NURBS cylinder with an end sweep of 180 and top and bottom caps on. I tried to convert to polygons, but then I got stuck on how to build a face (for where the frets will be placed) because I'm unsure of where to go next with that, so it doesnt look like a hollow half cylinder. Can anyone help me out on this one with the next steps for these two methods, or another more realistic method if any of you guys know.

Thankyou kind people

Rodinius

Yup either go sub-D with it or do a mesh smooth on it. If you're using Maya 2008 you can do the new smooth preview function (press 3 on the keyboard). It won't render like that unless you convert the smooth preview to a smooth mesh (under the convert options).
