poly object vertex soft selection problem

Hi all i am new to maya , was trying to model using poly object , so was in vertex mode then noticed whenever i select a vertex there is some kind of a soft selection applied that i can't move that vertex alone i end up moving almost the whole object when i move 1 vertex any ideas how to fix that , it's probably a feature set on active by default i just can't find it since i lack knowledge about the software atm so any ideas pls ?

You must have the extended version of Maya 2008. If you hold down b and drag to the left you will get rid of it. If you drag to the right you can increase the size of it. It's really useful but I can only imagine how frustrating it is if you don't know what's going on.
