how to solve a dirty, grubby render problem

i wonder if any one can help me, i have rendered an object using mental ray, and for some reason my render appears very grubby and dirty. i imagine my render settings are probably wrong, if any one knows how to solve this problem that would be great.

*stumped*
lets start with increasing your raytrace shadow settings
reflection 10
refractions 10
max trace depth 20

and try that
