Expert Mode

Found this short cut the other day. If you hold down Control and press the Space bar it takes you to what Ive dubbed expert mode.

In other words it gets rid of pretty much everything, all you are left with is the pane menu and the system menu thats it, oh and ofcourse the veiwport. Can switch between veiws as normal using the space bar. Can even get rid of the pane menu and system menu using the hot box, also use the hotbox to bring back bits that you want back. How ever if you switch out of expert mode and go back in, it wont keep the last configuration.

Just hit Control and Space bar to get out.

I may just be telling you something you already know but its a new one to me!

If you want a super streamlined workspace here is a mel script I just wrote, well I say wrote I copied and pasted bits from the mel listener.

Hides pretty much everything.
Code:
HideUIElements;
toggleMainMenubar 0;
toggleMenuBarsInAllPanels 0;
Brings it all back.
Code:
RestoreUIElements;
toggleMainMenubar 1;
toggleMenuBarsInAllPanels 1;
Just assign these to short cuts if you want to use them, dont do what I did and assign them to your shelf, as when you hide all the shelf dissapears so not much point putting the show all on the shelf.

Ok after much trial and error Ive managed to make it into a toggle switch, so you only need one short cut now.

I really should learn how to script correctly.

This will hide, pretty much everything, the menu bar the panel menu and all ui elements, press it again and it will bring it all back.

Code:
if (`optionVar -q mainWindowMenubarVis`) {setMainMenubarVisible 0;} else {setMainMenubarVisible 1;};
if (`optionVar -q allowMenusInPanels`) {toggleMenuBarsInAllPanels 0;} else {toggleMenuBarsInAllPanels 1;};
ToggleUIElements;
Just assign it to a short cut key.

Could just be a version difference of max or Maybe you changed the shortcut for expert mode by accident? ctrl + space doesn't appear to do anything in the version of max that i use (2009 sp1).
You can do some pretty handy stuff with max script might have to look into that one day.
Do you use the expert view often? I don't seem to use it so much as i don't know the shortcuts for most of the thing i do and i'm certanly not a max expert :P

He He.. this is the maya forum, the script and shortcut are both for maya not max.

I like to work in expert mode sometimes as in maya I love to use the hotbox think its great.
I think expert mode in max is control and x, not sure though.

omg i must be going blind
something about working on laptop with backlight on low and dark forum style
I'll be sure to check twice next time before exposing my "expert" opinions
Having extra screen space is always good in my opinion but i'm not advanced enough so it slows my modeling down working with quad menu's and guessing the shortcuts.
