Some big problems removing subdiv mirror.

Hi everyone.
I've modelled a head in Maya and to be honest it isn't smooth enough or great so I may try to remodel it again, but in any case that isn't the biggest problem.
I built up the head first from a cube with those height and width divisions then I followed advice to chop in half, mirror, work in reflection, snap to grid etc. and at some point I started using mirrored subdivs to model my head. When I reached the end and I tried to remove the subdiv the model gets messed up by stretching sideways. O_o
I fiddled around with Maya loads afterwards and I coudn't figure out what I've done wrong. I've kept looking through my book but as some people may know these books are useless if you ever run into problems.
What do the experts here advise I do?

Thanks in advance.

Could you upload your file in an attachment, it might make it easier for people to see what the problem is.

There you go sorry about that. I thought it would be something that can be answered quite easily!

dont worry dude fixed it.
i duplicated the model as assigned " lambert1" to the head.

if you want to see it smoothed select the model and press "3" on the keyboard, its smooth mesh preview. to get it back to its original state select the model and press "1"

btw smooth mesh preview wont render, just press the smooth button (mesh>smooth) if you want to render it

One thing that not many people seem to know, if you use smooth preveiw you can go to modify convert smooth preview > polygons.

I find it useful to use sometimes especially if Ive made changes to the mesh while in smooth preview mode.

Thanks for the replies! I'll have a look at that when I get back from work!
I see you're also from coventry, you ain't far from me!
See what I like about these books is thought they cover a lot of ground if you run into any problems they're useless!

Oh wow thanks a lot! So basically in this situation it's best to just duplicate the model and assign a material to it it to fix it?

[edit]

Hmm I've gotten to the stag where I have completed my model ready for texturing, so I followed advice and tried to soften the entire thing, freeze transformations and get rid of history to clean it up. However when I freeze transformation the head and some of the hair go transparent. O_o I can't attach it however as it exceeds forum size, any suggestions?
