Problem with the high quality rendering (screenshots)

Hi everyone,

first I would like to thank everyone who helped me. I got anwers and help for all my questions here on this forum and I'm doing some progress in my first maya project.

But there's another problem: I'm modelling the half of a car and when I duplicate it, put the 2 pieces together and use the high quality render (renderer -> high quality render) I'm getting a weird result like this:

When I preview the scene using the default quality rendering it looks ok:

Any clues?

Those images are snapshots from maya. Since the project contains a script it won't be exported/rendered.

There will also be many copies of the car and it may be too much for a normal computer (the whole scene may run slowly). Maybe there's a way to export the scene as a non-editable file?

PS: opinions and critics are welcome...

Thanks in advance.

I think its due to the two halfs not being joined together. Try joining them and welding the vertacies.

Also if you have alot of the same geometry you can try instancing it, also you can try using display layers.

high quality doesnt make your renders better, what will make your renders better is better lighting, materials. there are tutorials out there about lighting i suggest you take a look at them to get a better idea.

why dont you link him to your studio lighting tutorial younglion?

weird line is caused by the two pieces overlapping. i use the high-quality function all the time to see my normal maps (in your face max users :P) just select half the model and slide it across

hi supertom thanks for the advice but do you mean with "joining the halfs" the polygon combine tool? I've just tested it: combined the 2 car pieces, merged the vertices and deleted the edges generated from the merge of the vertices. The result is much better:

but the fact is that this will be a rough racing game and it will run only on maya. so it won't be exported or rendered. that's why the high quality rendering is usefull here, but you're right I really need to check some light tutorials, I'm a beginner... :-)

high quality function is really awesome!

PS: btw do you guys know how to make a glass shader (for cars)? as you can see, the glass from the car doesn't look good... :-(

Thanks!
