If the reduce tool doesn't work as it should reduce them manually by deleting edges and merging vertices. Also, try to keep your polygons as quads (4 sided) as tris give some problematic areas in the mesh if you smooth them (for future reference). Asigning the objects , like the wheels, to layers won't make the mesh have less polygons, but it lets you control what you want to see on the screen. For instance: if the wheels give you a hard time when mucking aound with the underside of the body, you can hide the layer to which they're asigned.

ah ok, thanks for the clarification inprogress. for some parts the reduce tool worked well, but for most it doesnt work well. oh well about the layers Ive tried them after you and the other guys told me and they really help a lot! :-)
