how to rig cartoon/humanoid figures

i'm looking for some tips on how to rig a character i have modeled. the head, boots, hands. jacket, are seperate. the torso/legs are in one piece. i've seen where some tease clips of tutorials and they have their characters of head, neck, chest, stomach, waist, thigh, shin, and foot seperate and rigged as that. leaveing gaps as they move them around. did i do my character set to be rigged wrong? much help is needed here.

I'd recommend the book "3ds Max Animation with Biped" by Michele Bousquet and Michael McCarthy. It's got some good tutorials on rigging characters, and in my opinion the biped in Max works fine.

join this website
and download this tutorial : Simply Maya - 3D Video tutorials. Skeleton Basics - Part1 tutorial
its about setting up bones in maya

huge website with maya tutorials : Learning-Maya.com | Character Setup Tutorials
take your pick

besides that you could try the character set up tutorial over at digital tutors
Digital-Tutors :: Maya :: Rigging :: Character Setup in Maya
but it costs money
