He means to highlight the track you want to replace in the timeline window (the grid layer you created previously), then with that layer still highlited, select the fractal material (glowing one) from the project content window (top left) and drag it, whilst holding down ALT, and drop it onto the grid layer in the timeline window.

This replaces the files with the new file but keeps the original files parameters (3d layers rotation etc).

Thats how I read it from what he was saying in the tut, Its also how I would do it if I were making thise effect in AE.
