[MAX] Just starting and wanted to say hello

Hello, sorry if this is the wrong part of the forum but i hadnt posted anything and wanted to say hello!

I have bought and downloaded the APU tutorial DVD so i'm currently working through that. It is a fantastic buy, far better than any other free tutorial i think! The only problem i have sometimes is when what he is doing doesn't quite look like what i have on the screen :P but i just take my time and keep trying it until it does.

So i hope to get some WIPs up soon.

JackyBoy

ps if this is in the wrong bit, sorry

Welcome to the forum JackyBoy.
I started the APU a while back, but I never finished it. I only made it about half way through. I should probably go back and finish it one of these days.

Anyway, I understand what you're saying about not getting the form and scale just right. That's the difficult part about following video tutorials. As good as they may be, it's difficult to know exactly what size things are on screen. I have dual monitors, so I can have the video running on one screen while modeling on the other, and every so often, I will hit pause and rotate my model around to see if it matches what's on the video screen. If something doesn't look right, then I will make adjustments before continuing.

Good luck.

Thanks for the welcome

Luckily i have dual monitors as well and quite a fast pc so i don't have any slow down which means it's only my own incompetence that i can get frustrated at :P
But if i do have any problems with it, is it ok to post in here or better to post in the specific 3ds Max forum?

You should make a WIP thread and post your progress and questions there.

Haha, cheers for the comments, i know it's not much but everyone started somewhere.

got a little further. been quite busy with work so havent done loads, but im still really enjoying it so that's good that i know i will carry on!

It's getting easier to follow the tut as i know how to do stuff quicker now like cutting or colapsing, it doesn't sound like a big thing, but it makes it easier to learn!

I'm mainly learning to model for games so i won't need to model at such a high level but i still think its a good idea to carry on with the tutorials just for the future

thanks for looking

That's what makes these tut's so ESSENTIAL. If 3d palace didn't put up such great tuts, I wouldn't be able to make a robot to save my life. I'd still be looking at the finished models and wondering how the hell those guys did that. Also the whole "where do I start" thoughts creep along, but that's resolved as well.

Good work with the model so far. I've found the bottom half harder to work with than the top, especially the rigging parts. Looking forward to more JackyBoy.

Looking good JackyBoy! I find following the tutorials from here a great way to build up skills and create awesome models, currently following the Dreadnought tutorial myself.

Btw- noticed you're from Leicester.... so am I! Its a small world!
