Ive never seen an option to delete a default light. Only inside of VRay. In the years Ive used max, ive never accidentally deleted a default light. ever. period! Adding lights to your scene overrides max's delault light, but when you deleted that light out, max's light kicks in again. Have you brought up the light lister and had a good look? Do you have any layers that are hidden? Deleting a default light seens nigh-on-impossible without 3rd party rendering systems.
Sounds to me like a fubar file. Follow Cad64's advice and that should solve it. The only way you can have a lightless file is if there is a light hidden in a layer that is turned on but with a 0 multiplier.
