Selection, Deselection confusion

I must be missing something. I'm marquee selecting the bulk of polygons on a prticular part of my object and then when I go to Raycast mode and hold down CTRL and try to deselect the few fiddly small polys I don't want, the damn things are not deselecting.

Can anyone explain what's going on to this noob

Hard to say what the problem really is but you should know that:
- CTRL is not for deselect, it toggles selection.
- CTRL-SHIFT to deselect.

Also, you may have "Extended Component Selection" switched on. In which case, the middle mouse button is for de-select. You'll find it in the "Select" menu of the MCP:

Thanks all...

I'll check out my settings for extended component selection when I get home, but I haven't messed with any default settings.

I suspect the problems may be a result of the free-style, off the top of my head manner in which I constructed my model. I'm sure I tidied up all edges and verts though and things look okay in the information display (ALT+ENTER with object selected).

Maybe I should be systematic and start breaking up the main parts of my model and checking them over again.
