Have you guys all got 7 working OK?

I get "The server ID for this system does not match . . .etc." It seems to have support stumped. It's been a couple of weeks already.

Just wondered if anyone else has the same problem with the new releases licensing. Or can anyone think of something I might have done wrong that is too dumb and obvious for support consider.

Hey Spludge. I had a very similar problem when I tried to installed mine. Here was my error message:

"Error: We are unable to assign an upgrade license to this Server ID.
The quantity of licenses does not match, or this Server ID does not
have the appropriate license to upgrade from.
"

I sent an email to Softimage support and it turns out there was an error in my Softimage account. Apparently, I had a version 6.5 licensed but I never had that version! As soon as they fixed that, everything was working correctly and I was able to assign a license. Maybe you have a similar problem? When you have to select an item to assign a license, do you have some item(s) that aren't yours?

Another idea: If you're using Vista, you have to start the License Manager as an Administrator. Found that solution on Softimage community:

New customers and Vista license activation - SOFTIMAGE|NET

Quote:
New customers and Vista license activation
On Vista, you must always run the License Manager as Administrator:

1. Click Start > All Programs > Softimage Products.
2. Right-click License Manager and click Properties.
3. Click the Compatibility tab.
4. Under Privilege Level, select the Run the program as an administrator check box.
5. Click OK.

If you do not run the License Manager as Administrator, then you will have one or more of the following problems:

* Both Start Server and Stop Server are disabled.
* On the Service menu, Install License Server Service is disabled.
* Wrong System ID error when you try to install your permanent license.
* Cannot contact service manager error when you try to activate your permanent license.

There are two underlying problems:

* The License Manager generates a different system ID depending on whether or not you run as Administrator.
* If you do not run as Administrator, the License Manager does not have to required permissions to install the license server service (the license server is a Windows service).

Definitely something to think about there Bud.

I have 4.2 FND and 6.5 ADV (Student) installed. Maybe that's confusing it.

Only 7 comes up on the "assign" list. I reckon the 4.2 and 6.5 should be listed too if things were as they should be.

Also I'm running XP home 32 but my error message says I need to be logged on as administrator. I don't get to log on as administrator. I just AM the administrator on this system. That could account for the underlying problems.

No doubt they'll fix it sooner or later it's just that I'm going nuts to have a play with ICE.

Thanks for the comments Bud. At least I now know a bit more about the wacky world of XSI licensing.

Sorry to here about the problems you're having Spludge. I'm not sure your other installs are to blame though. I still have 5 FND and 6.5 ESS on my machine, and 7 installed without any problems.

I hope you get it sorted soon.

Even though I don't know the software nor the licensing I asume the Server ID is a hardware based "hash".

FlexLM uses mostly the network card MAC address, MathCad (also FlexLM) on the other hand uses a CPU based hash and some other software I'm managing takes a full hardware search/hash, so if you change hardware it fails to run.

So a wild guess would be (as other have had problems with earlier versions). That you installed the earlier versions. Upgraded some hardware and now when you try installing the new one (it finds the old and tries to upgrade the licenses and get mismatch on the Server ID due to hardware change).

This was a total longshot but I really like to talk/write so it didn't cost me a thing, just some work minutes and your time reading this rubbish.

heck Macca it amazes me how anyone would even know stuff like that in the first place! I didn't know where a server ID comes from.

It's fixed now. (Yay!) and what it was is my serverID was associated with a trial version used by some company I'd never heard of so I'd never have been able to fix it myself. Support was good though and they fixed it fine.
Looks like I'm going to have an 'ICE weekend! ;-)
