The Matrix Sentinel Tutorial 2

This thread is a placeholder - Biroboy has officially called me out to upgrade the bonus disk of the APU set which contains the Sentinel tutorial to its own set. As such I shall be doing as I did with the Dreadnought 2 to Venerable Dreadnought in rebuilding significant parts of the front, adding overdetail where needed, rebuilding the tentacles using more modern methodologies, creating a new nodal rig with waveform follow animation procedurally generated and also adding in textures.

ETA is undecided, research will begin as soon as the server upgrade is midway.

Time permitting I will try and make a bonus dvd and download set to cover swarming of high polygon objects using proxying, particle storms and compositing.

We were just talking about this. The sentinel could have been the main part of that set and is possably one of the best tutorials released by palace. Great to see it getting a facelift.

While we are on the whole subject of tutorial upgrades, this might be an ideal time to incorporate a model to some PFlow, I mean I dont think Max can cope with anything similar to Ragu's Fist of God without killing the PC, but something like that could be cool.

*Hopes that Cris doesn't use as many triangles in a sub-d mesh, as he did in the Sentinel*...hehehehe. Actually Biroboy, you can grab a cache script online that caches particle sims to disk rather than RAM for PFlow, and it auto-reads those files back in from HDD. Also realtime scrubbing with millions of particles in the scene is cool on it's own. This is what I do in Houdini, therefor freeing up lots of lovely ram for better suited tasks.

It's all about resource micro-management.

Huzzah for Sentinel re-vamp!

Actually it can however it would need a few tricks to work - generally you would need LOD for the sentinel for obvious reasons - then generate the particle storms using proxied Mental Ray objects. Lots of storms using different LOD models with closer models having the more detailed ones and a LOT of camera trickery.

This thread is now epic "5-star" bellboy controlled area. Fist of god is still one of the best particle effects ever made...
