A quick update for you - I suffer with insomnia, so what better way to make it work for me than to get into work early (about 9.30pm Sunday night) tidy up a bit and get the prep work done on the Behemoth model so I can start the painting this week. However, once I got to work I also realised that there was an internet connection and ... well, I'm up to date with Big Bang Theory.
I have started prepping the model, however, and have hit a bit of a snag. The casting seems to be from a batch near to the end of the mould's working life, and the pewter used isn't the best (cheap ass fucking bollocks). I shall make no digs at the casters save to inform you all that it is an American casting and not one from PP Europe (based in Liverpool, UK for those interested in the minutiae).
There is a little warping too, but that is unavoidable in a model of this type cast in this way. Basically, metal minatures are cast (spun) in a vulcanised rubber centrifugal mould. When the metal has cooled the parts are removed. Simple, right? Unfortunately, there can be warping as the metal is still slightly pliable and there are also issues with shrinkage generally not seen with resin casting (most resin is 'cold cast').
Add to this the fact that this model is probably from the lot a couple of years back that had flaking/crumbling problems and I've had an interesting morning with random shards of pewter bouncing off my fucking face. I'm not looking forward to pinning the damn thing if it is from the crumbly batch.
Oh, and from here on in, olblue is now to be known as Butler, simply so I can say:
'Nyerrr, I hate you Butler'.
Fucking commissions aren't worth the pain in my fucking arse.
