It's mud time!

My plan was initially to use this challenge to learn some Houdini, but my god is that app hard to learn. I followed about 5 hours of video tutorials I found over at the official site, and even though I learned alot, I didn't learn the stuff needed to render a pile of mud. One reason may be the fact that I don't even know how to render something in Houdini.

So I went back to my good old max and mental ray and ended up with this:

This mud was done more or less free hand and for reasons unknown ended up looking a little bit naughtier than I had hoped.

I have some great reference images of different kinds of mud I want to try my luck with, but we'll see how much time I have to spare.

Here's the map browser.

The object is just a geosphere, and the scene is just some spot lights for specular reflections and a skylight for the lighting.

Thats the sort of mud I get the morning after a heavy Guiness session.

Looks great, well it looks like crap, but in this case that is great

Maybe a slightly darker shade of brown would make it better. Sometimes it's little things like that that make all the difference.

But then it wouldn't look that much like dung, would it now?

Most of the mud I see is actually more red or grey depending on what kind of mud it is. The color of my mud however was just taken out of thin air.

After seeing how stiff the competition has become I may work some more on my mud.
