Are You A Cracking 3D Generalist - Missile Part 1


So the question is.........are you?

Each week I will add a new challenge for you all to take part in. Kepp in mind that this is a generalist challenge, so each week the subject might move away from modeling into any other aspect of 3d, including rigging, animation, particles, ect, ect.
Dont be shy, this thread is aiming to get you (end user) to get creative and jump into the community spirit, and have a play perhaps in area's of 3d you are not accustom to.

Unless specified by me, each challenge will last 1 week, and will be judged by myself on a paticular method of choice, that boils down to the specifics of that challenge. So if its a challenge on rigging and you chose to create your own model, I will not take into account the excellence of the model you have created, but mearly the rig you have created.

Any package may be used, and also any secondary packages can be used (e.g: Z-Brush, Mudbox, ect, ect). There really isnt much in the lines of rules, there are no time limits (apart from the week limit, as this is not a speed modeling challenge).

All challenges will finish at 20:00 GMT on the end day of the challenge, if you are not sure when that time is in your part of the world, look no further than here Time Zone Converter for your conversion needs.
The requirements are that you make a render with a resolution of no more than 1024x768.
Add a passage of text, explaining how you made your creating, so that others might benifit from your workflows, especially if your workflow is slightly obscure to the average way of doing things.

Any supporting images to your workflow

A WIP thread can be made in the WIP forum with the naming convention..

3D Generalist_(enter topic here E.G: Mud): "Your name goes here"

However a wip thread is not needed if you dont wish, but having a wip thread grants you questions and answers from the community.
All finished renders and screenies are to go in this thread as shown in my example.

Welcome back to another are you a cracking generalist challenge. This week I want you to model and texture a missile of your choice. can be a real life version, or a invented one from your imagination HOWEVER this is a 2 part challenge.
This week is the creation and texturing of a missile, and the following week will be the animation of that missile. So I suggest you use this week to storyboard next weeks animation out for your missile as well as building it, as you want to know exactly what is going to be happening in your animation before you create your model.

BE CREATIVE!!

Once you have submitted your final render of your missile, that is the mesh and textures that will be used in next weeks animation, so dont loose it!!!
Anyways back to this weeks challenge, the build...

I chose a British Trident missile...


Very easy construction...

Created a curve backbone...
...Revolved that...
...added various bevels...
...created primative groups for textures...
...added textures.

Water is a circle converted into a mesh for details, and a is displaced with a mountainSOP.

NOTE: The missile is the only thing that counts, you dont have to make a stand or props ect, ect.

Again you have 1 week ending at 20:00 GMT on the 30th July 2008.

This may not be for this part of the comp, but: Can we use some older models in the animation? (target, launcher, etc)

Yes. The animation will be scored by the animation of the missile you create this week. Props will not be taken into account when scoring.

REMEMBER: be creative...

Just make a quick missile for part 2 man, or I can upload mine for you to use, although its not a detailed one. Or you could use the time from now until about 5pm tomorrow to get one built to enter this part 1.

The prereq's is to be creative. Do anything you wish. missile firing--->missile flying--->exploding or doesnt have to be that either. A missile is an explosive weapon, but it doesnt have to explode, depends on your storyboarding and your creativity.

The biggest pre-req is to have fun.

Didn't start animating yet cause's i thought there would be some rules.
Like.. eeehhrrmm, length of animation, launch of missle, flight, explosion and such :P
