BMW studio setup test

I was cleaning my room and came across the 3d world cover cd #109 which included a bunch of vehicle models. I've always wanted to do a car studio render when I get my Audi A3, or another car model, done, but that may be a while so I decided to try it out with the BMW model included on the cd instead.

Here's the result after about 2 hours fiddling with materials and lighting, 5 minutes of rendering and about 5 minutes of compositing (basically added the zdepth as a slight dof and a slight bit of noise):

The car came complete with materials and everything, but the materials were standard raytrace materials. I created my own Arch & Design materials and swapped out every single one.

I also modeled some quick tires becauses the included ones where totally smooth. The lighting is more or less a standard 3 point lighting setup with photometric area lights. No global illumination or final gather was used.

I used After Effects for some very quick compositing because I find it easier and more intuitive to use than photoshop.

I think it came out much better than I initally thought it would and hope you like it.

I like it, a few things to note:

1. Up the DoF.. in 80% of cases it will look better.. there are some instances you won't want it but this isnt one of them.

2. The overall image is too bright: Bring down the brightness, simple.

3. The overall look is too "clean". This is a harder one to explain. If you're going for that new car catalog look then it's fine, if you're going for realism you need to try and dull it down a bit (I guess this kind of ties in with /2.

Overall a good look. I'd learn how to adjust renders in photoshop as I think you'll find it will quickly give your renders a very finished feel. After Effects is ok but in my experience it lacks the finealities (is that a word?) of photoshop.
