OK, after working through the Crux Weapon tutorial and seeing some of the ways to handle things (gee, I never figured free-handing polys could be so fun), I have decided to strike out on my own with the Blade from Steel Battallion.
Things I have learned so far:
1) Chamfer is your friend
2) Booleans work even in Blender, but clean up is a zoo.
3) As I said above, freehand can be fun!
Here is what I have to date (Yes, I know the legs are supposed to be bent in toward the main body, but I'll leave them on this way so I can deal with details then move them into position later. Details are so much easier this way.):
By the way, this is all in Blender. What do you think so far? (last pic is one of my reference images)

The back of the foot needs to be bigger in all dimensions and moved back, the toe needs to be shorter and taller, the shin part is too low and is the wrong shape at the top, the middle of the knee joint is supposed to be bigger and have a hole in the middle, the front hip plate needs to be a little longer and the part behind scaled in Z a little and loads of little details to be added all over.
Good start, but needs some work. Try to match the camera angle of your ref and then switch back and forth to match the scale more closely.

Hell yes!!! finally someone is modelling another mech from this truly awesome game.
Search for quasar and your see my wips on the mech.
Did you have steel batallion? i did and it was soooooo sweet. 70+ button controller with 3 foot pedles. Just pure awesomeness.
I have bookmarked and cant wait to see more. My Steel Batallion mech is trying to keep as close to the concept as possible rather than the game model itself.
Hoefully your progress will be faster than mine as my quasar was started over 1 year and half ago lol.
Keep it up !

OK, Fluxity. Let me get this straight:
1) The shin part is the long white piece above the foot.
2) The knee joint is the cylinder itself.
3) Is Z in the up direction from your point of view ?(from the toe to the head is Z in my world)
4) The front hip plate is the shield thing at the top of the leg in front of everything?
I'm just asking to get the parts straight. I'd hate to be working from the wrong set of assumptions.
This may be the wrong way to go about it, but I was working on overall shape first. I then wanted to go back and put in details. But thanks for the crits. I want to do a good job on this.
Thanks Setsuka, for the comments. I have never played the game although we have an X-box here. I just want to drool over that controller. Maybe e-bay one of these days...

1. yup

Ah right, fair enough, everyone works differently. I usually just use random blocks to sort out the overall scale first and then just finish each piece separately as most details needs cuts in the right place.
I sold my Steel Battalion prolly about a year n'alf ago and still got around £100 I think, so they're prolly still going for a fair bit.

OK, I'm working on it. I tried to put the mech in its reference pose. I fixed a few things and I am slowly adding details.

Here's another update. I sort of started with the basic foot assembly I had and fleshed it out, detailed it up, and moved things around. It's not 100% accurate, but I'm happy so far.

Nother update. I'm taking some liberties with the details, since the drawing really just makes use of shadows to hint at things under the shell. I'm gonna call the lower leg finished for now.
