Came across these articles on using mental ray in 3dmax, which are well worth a look at

Welcome to mental ray for Design Visualization

Download the pdfs rather than trying to read them via the web as the layout is small.

They are actualy part of a book mastering mental ray by Jennifer O'conner due to be published in April this year but are still well worth a read.

Thanks I will have to check them out I just finished one book on rendering with mental ray, it was ok but I found it was lacking, it gave good explantions i'm just not sure how much I took away from it.

Over all it was worth the money I think. (its a bit older, max 9 I think, when they came out with Arch & design mats)

Thanks for the links, I am going to check them out. Kind of looking for some more books I can learn more from, (educate myself on the street cars/subway)

zap's mental ray tips: March 2010
Plenty of tips on mental ray that I came across whilst better trying to learn mental ray. Whilst trying to find specific answers to problems are a bit hap hazard, there are some very good answers there.
