These look great. How did you manage to get that great material and lighting setup for your renders?

Hi DoctorBubble.
I really like the first and third images you uploaded along with the disruptor drone renders. They are really nice WIP renders and id like to be able to recreate that.

The first one render was made choosing a mental ray shader and adding an ambient/ reflective occulsion pass in the surface slot, I also zero out the max distance parameter. I then darken the image via After Effects.
The third render/ orange render was rendered using again the mental ray ambient/ reflection occulsion option and then using a HDRI map in the environmental setting (press 8 and select a map, preferably a blurry one) and set the mental ray material to reflective in the ambient occulsion option - the HDRI map will provide the light source. I also composited the image inside After Effects and slightly adjusted the contrast and added an additional glow. Giving a more warmer colour to the render.
The disruptor drone look was created by a basic A&D matte material with the AO switched on with a low reflection. I added 4 omni lights around the perimeter to give it a tinge of colour, 2 dark orange and 2 blue.
I hope this helped in some way
- let me know if would like any more information.

Here's my crab tank bomber like-thing lol with different shaders and textures (yes I'm aware the textures etc couldve been better and more thought-out)
1. Mental ray using the AO shader - then I added a photo filter in post using After Effects.
2. Autodesk metal shader with a basic daylight system to light the scene.
3.An AO using the same method as 1 , I also added a glow.
4. Variable textures and shaders with a daylight system. Background sky added in post.

For anybody wanting to know the settings I used for these ambient occlusion renders using mental ray:
Samples 100
Max distance 1500
the remaining settings were left to default.
I then composited the renders in After Effects and added a colour correction (to reduce the contrast) and a photo filter effect to give it some colour

This is not my design but rather a satellite design I found on Google images. I thought it was an ideal shape to do some model practice. I've added some additional extras like thrusters, decals and some rusty textures.

This was the original mining ship design before I decided to change it to the design you see in my very first post of this thread. The topology on the original being messy, the viewport slowing down to a crawl and not knowing any better at the time.

Here's a new one -just a spin on the so-called UFO shape - took me around 6 hrs - basic A&D shader - yes the landing gear is crappy.
