In this tutorial students will learn how to make complex modelled interactive mechanical objects, in this case a huge piloted robot, coming from the very minimum of one piece of concept art. The students will learn how to create everything that is seen in the project, covering the kitbash libraries, dynamic moving parts, the movement rig and every detail in between. Students will learn how to use 3ds Max to a very high level as a 3d modeller, even coming at it as a new user. In addition students will learn Unwrapping, how to create textures in Quixel Studio, how to use Quixel Mixer, how to set up and use Arnold Renderer, how to use Activeshade, Dynamic Animation methods, Rigging, Ergonomic Workflow, Mechanical Interoperability, Poly Modelling, Spline Animation, Dynamic Rigging Techniques and a lot more.

This tutorial was created for the Chinese education market originally and as such a LOT of references by myself are made to the poor and hard working Subtitle creators – somewhat of a one sided conversation that was admittedly hilarious to me. This may well be why the Chinese, French and Spanish subs are still not ready yet…

This set is the culmination of over 20 years of my ideas on how to make building mechs and robots look as good as possible and animate as well as possible. It includes new ideas that will probably cause a little strain on your system in places as well as new workflows I was developing as the set was being produced. I would say it is one of my best works and I present it to you, hoping you will purchase it, enjoy it and ,in an ideal world, not throw it on a torrent to up your ratio. Put it this way, each set I sell is one step closer to affording to keep my electric on.

I have been in the industry a very long time, becoming a 3d artist in my early 20’s once the technology was available to artists more easily. While learning 3d I was unhappy at the cost and content of commercial training, manuals being very expensive and video training virtually unheard of and developed my own teaching techniques and learning videos.

I have worked on many projects over the years including the rebuild of the Cutty Sark, Elite Tournament, The Outsider, ClinicVR, Serenity, and more. I have lectured all over Europe including at Autodesk University, Staffordshire University, Teesside University, EUE Utrecht, Animex and several others. In addition to this I have created over 20 commercial learning sets, contributed to several books and have produced over 2000 hours of free training material as video learning sets for free distribution.
